Our Approach

Your 30s - 50s are when it matters most

It’s when you first start noticing shifts:

- Energy declining

- Metabolism slowing

- Sleep that doesn't restore

- Weight creeping up even when eating well

- Labs look "normal" but you feel off

That’s because metabolic dysfunction, hormonal imbalance, and early inflammation often begin a decade (or more) before appear on standard labs.

At Innate, we help you stay ahead of that curve — with a preventative, physiology-based approach grounded in both conventional and functional medicine.

Led by Dr. Amy Shah, DO (double board-certified in Internal Medicine + Integrative Medicine, also certified by IFM in Functional Medicine), this is care that goes deeper:

Connecting the dots across gut health, metabolism, hormones, inflammation, and longevity pathways — to build a personalized plan that supports how you want to feel now and in the decades to come.

Because optimizing your healthspan may start earlier than you think.

What sets us apart:

  • 1:1 physician support — not a wellness coach

  • Telemedicine visits across Texas, on your schedule

  • Root-cause focus, not symptom management

  • Collaborative referrals to complementary practitioners

What is Integrative Medicine?

Integrative Medicine is a healing-oriented approach that considers the whole person — mind, body, and spirit — along with all aspects of lifestyle.

It combines the best of conventional medicine and evidence-based complementary therapies to promote optimal health and healing.

Rather than focusing solely on treating symptoms, Integrative Medicine aims to:

  • Understand and address root causes of dysfunction

  • Empower patients with the tools to optimize their health

  • Strengthen the body’s innate healing capacity

Care may include personalized nutrition, targeted supplements, mind-body practices, movement, stress resilience strategies, referrals to ayurvedic/reiki/traditional chinese practitioners/massage therapists/specialists (neurology, cardiology) and — when appropriate — conventional medical treatments.

At its core, Integrative Medicine is about partnering with patients to prevent disease and support long-term wellbeing.

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine is a systems-based, root-cause approach to care.

Rather than viewing the body in isolated parts or symptoms, Functional Medicine sees it as an interconnected system — where genetics, environment, nutrition, lifestyle, and stress all interact to influence health.

Functional Medicine practitioners aim to:

  • Identify underlying drivers of dysfunction

  • Personalize treatment plans based on your unique physiology

  • Optimize the body’s ability to function well over time

Care often includes:

  • Advanced lab testing (not typically used in conventional care)

  • Precision nutrition

  • Movement and stress optimization

  • Gut and microbiome support

  • Targeted supplementation or medications when appropriate

Functional Medicine is particularly effective for chronic, complex, and early-stage conditions — and for those seeking to maintain health before disease emerges.

These approaches complement each other in offering a holistic, patient-centered model of care. They share the philosophy of using both conventional and alternative therapies and placing an emphasis on prevention, education, and the active participation of patients in their own healing process.

How It Works

1. Intro Call

A Free 15 minute consult to:

  • Talk through your current goals

  • Review whether this approach is a good fit

  • Get answers about next steps---no pressure

2. Initial Consultation +

Follow up

In your 60–90 minute initial visit, we’ll explore:

  • A deep dive into your full health history

  • Your unique physiology: Gut, hormone, metabolic, and inflammation patterns

  • Early risk markers not typically screened in conventional care

  • How your body is aging “under the surface” — even if your labs still look normal

During the initial follow up (30-45 minutes) we will focus on:

→ A personalized protocol using conventional and integrative approaches based on your physiology (including nutrition, lifestyle, targeted supplementation)
→ A lab roadmap to track and optimize key markers over time

3. Follow Up

Ongoing follow-ups (typically 30–45 min)

→ New labs (usually with a need to look further into a specific body system--like gut microbiome testing, other specialized functional medicine testing)
→ Plan adjustments as your goals evolve, this is ongoing adaptive care.
→ Life phase changes (hormonal transitions, stress load, lifestyle shifts)

To Our Healthcare Workers

We offer integrative health screenings for healthcare workers with personalized insights into their current health from an integrative and functional medicine perspective. While maintaining a primary care physician is essential, this service provides an additional/preliminary layer of understanding to help optimize your well-being and address underlying factors that may be impacting your health. Take the first step toward prioritizing yourself—because caring for others starts with caring for you. Schedule a discovery call, after which we will obtain lab work, followed by a 1:1 consultation with actionable insights. Flexible timing/tele-medicine visits offered.

Functional Interpretation of Self-Ordered Tests

Many people now use self-ordered testing (Function Health, Viome, TinyHealth, 23 and me, etc) to better understand their health — whether it’s a comprehensive lab panel, gut microbiome test, hormone kit, or genetic analysis. These results can offer valuable and cutting edge insights, but without clinical context they can also feel overwhelming or unclear.

For help turning the data into something meaningful, or to simply understand what your numbers mean, Dr. Shah offers guidance and interpretation with a "functional lens, rooted in traditional medicine" based on each patient’s unique history, symptoms, and physiology.
